A variety of medications and herbal preparations have laxative effects. Pathophysiology Diarrhea occurs when the normal absorptive mechanism of the small intestine and colon is overwhelmed by excessive fluid secretion and hypermotility. The overall result is the passage of multiple frequent stools. Diarrhea is most objectively defined as the passage of more than 200 mL 200 g of stool per day. Diarrhea can be divided into several categories which are outlined below together with common causes of each. Acute Symptoms lasting from several days to 4 weeks. The majority of cases of acute diarrhea are due to viral bacterial or parasitic infection. Chronic Symptoms lasting 4 weeks.
