This study attempts to answei the questions Could MRI detect piion diseases before clinical symptoms appeai and if so with what confidence Methods Scrapie the piion disease of sheep was chosen foi the study because sheep can fit into a human sized MRI scannei and there were no laige animal MRI scanneis at the time of this study and because the USDA had at the time of the study a sizeable sample of sciapie exposed sheep which we weie able to use foi this puipose. 111 genetically susceptible sheep that weie naturally exposed to sciapie weie used in this study. Results Oui MRI findings revealed no cleai consistent hypeiintense oi hypointense signal changes in the biain on eithei clinically affected oi asymptomatic positive animals on any sequence. Howevei in all 37 PiPSc positive sheep 28 asymptomatic and 9 symptomatic theie was a gieatei ventiicle to ceiebium aiea ratio on MRI compared to 74 PiPSc negative sheep fiom the sciapie exposed flock and 6 contiol sheep fiom certified sciapie fiee flocks as defined by immunohistochemistiy IHC .
