Again polarity must be carefully observed when connecting the meter. Fig. 20-10 Series connection of ammeter Ohmmeter. Resistance of a component or circuit can be measured only with a meter when there is no current flowing through the circuit. An ohmmeter has its own low current supply that when the meter leads are attached to the circuit allows a small current to flow. The voltage drop through the circuit indicates the resistance of the circuit. To read a circuit s resistance first turn the meter to the desired resistance scale. Then connect the test leads together and adjust the meter to a zero reading Fig. 20-11 . The leads are then connected to the circuit. There is no polarity to observe. A low or zero reading indicates current will flow very easily. An infinite reading indicates no current will flow an open circuit. In other words when an ohm meter reading of less than infinity exists the current has found a continuous path along which it can travel continuity exists The ohmmeter is used to determine if there is continuity in a circuit. Infinite resistance indicates no path exists for electricity to flow and this is referred to as an open circuit. A very low or zero resistance reading indicates electricity has a very direct or short path to follow possibly finding a route not intended by the manufacturer a short or short circuit. Multimeters. Several different meter functions can be packaged in one case the resulting unit is a multimeter. A volt-ohmmeter-milliamp-meter VOM and the diagnostic service testors sold by the different bike makers are examples of multimeters you might use Fig. 20-12 . Use special care when selecting the meter function. A wrong selection could damage the meter. Make your selection
