Effect of sodium nitrite on the carbon steel corrosion inhibition in the aerated neutral (pH 7) and alkaline (pH 11) water solutions at temperatures from 30o C to 140o C has been investigated by mass loss, potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy methods. Hồ Chí Minh SUMMARY Effect of sodium nitrite on the carbon steel corrosion inhibition in the aerated neutral pH 7 and alkaline pH 11 water solutions at temperatures from 30oC to 140oC has been investigated by mass loss potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy methods. Sodium nitrite was added in concentrations 200 350 500 750 1000 1500 and 2000 ppm by mass. The steel samples were evaluated by mass loss measurements after 4 8 12 24 72 120 168 and 240 hours of immersion at 30oC after 4 hours and 8 hours of immersion at 60oC 100oC and 140oC. Experimental results revealed that the steel corrosion inhibition efficiency of sodium nitrite significantly effected by immersion time environment pH values and temperatures 1 Sodium nitrite has a positive effect for the formation of passive film and contribute to the reduction of the steel corrosion rate in the neutral and alkaline solutions 2 The steel corrosion rate reduced by increasing the dose of sodium nitrite in neutral and alkaline solutions 3 The addition of sodium nitrite has higher steel corrosion inhibition efficiency in the neutral solutions at the unexceeded 60oC temperatures and in the alkaline solutions at the unexceeded 100oC temperatures 4 Under these conditions of both neutral and alkaline solutions the optimum concentration of sodium nitrite is 500 ppm by mass and 5 The sodium nitrite has a slight effect on reducing of steel corrosion rate in alkaline solutions at the room temperature.
