This I have practiced thus many times with very good results even a few days ago in the care of Pirou Garbier a Postillion of M. Brusquet whose right leg was removed four fingers below the knee for a mortification which had developed because of a fracture. Paré argued vigorously for many years with his contemporaries to replace the cautery with ligation for the treatment of bleeding wounds. Paré s humility and faith in nature are epitomized by his famous remark I dressed him and God cured him made after his initial use of the ligature to achieve hemostasis. Paré also observed that his patient . got off cheaply without being miserably burned to stop the bleeding. Paré introduced the first arterial forceps his bec de corbin Figure . It was originally used to extract bullets and Paré subsequently modified it to grasp arteries to be ligated.
