Many years of struggling patient labor perseverance and cooperation with the company are going for naught simply due to an order as if the labor of an entire community were not worth even the tiniest 1 Mayor Samuel E. During the first half of the 20th century . banana companies operating in Central America shifted their production centers to such an extent that one observer likened the industry to the shadow of a fleeting protean cloud passing over the lands of the Caribbean. 2 Unlike a shadow however the space-invading banana industry radically transformed both the landscapes and livelihoods of the regions through which it passed. This chapter offers an agroecologic interpretation of the banana industry s uneven historical development along the Caribbean lowlands of Honduras and explores the cross-cutting effects of shifting production patterns on local livelihoods.
