Bananas are mostly grown in small gardens often in mixed cropping systems and mainly used for home consumption. Leaf and root pathogens are considered important limiting factors for banana production in Vietnam Chau et al. 1997 . In October 1997 the International Network for the Improvement of Banana and Plantain INIBAP and the Flemish Association for Development Cooperation and Technical Assistance VVOB started a project in the Vietnam Agricultural Science Institute VASI to study the different aspects of the association between nematodes and bananas in Vietnam. The project is co-funded by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research ACIAR and the Flemish Interuniversity Council VLIR . The project coordinators are Ms Inge Van den Bergh INIBAP Associate Expert Dr Ho Huu Nhi VASI Dr Dirk De Waele Catholic University of Leuven and Dr Julie Stanton ACIAR .
