TAILIEUCHUNG - The PC Doctor's Fix-it-Yourself Guide- P24

The PC Doctor's Fix-it-Yourself Guide- P24: A technical director for a UK-based computer company who teaches such courses as Caring for Your PC has developed prescriptions for treating sick PCs. Arguing the benefits of fixing it yourself rather than relying on experts, his mission is to empower users with trouble- shooting and safe repair skills. | CHAPTER 10 Other Data Storage Devices 219 Once you have finished wash the disc in water dry it and test it again. If you re lucky it will work. If not you haven t lost anything Practice if you want on a freebie disc before you try it out for real. Just add some scratches and see if you can get the disc to work Dead Drive Sudden drive death where it simply stops working isn t common. Electronics are relatively robust and long-lived. Sometimes however when you go to use a drive you will find that it has simply stopped working and the tray won t even open. Try rebooting the system to see if that helps. Next try these suggestions First check for signs of life. If the tray won t open check for lights illuminated on the front. If the drive seems completely dead open the PC case and check the data ribbon and the power cable. Reseat the ribbon connector and try again. If the first two suggestions don t solve the problem check inside the case for an alternative power cable and swap this one for the power cable currently being used. There are normally spare cables in the case. If the drive still doesn t work and everything else on the system seems to work properly then consider the drive faulty. FIGURE 10-3 Disc cleaning in action 220 The PC Doctor s Fix-It-Yourself Guide Releasing a Trapped CD DVD If you come across a completely dead drive one of the problems you might face is a disc trapped inside the drive. It s automatic to think that you have to dismantle the drive to get it out but fortunately there is usually a much easier way. Look at the front of the drive where in most cases you should see a small hole about 1 mm in diameter . This is the emergency disc ejection port. Switch off the PC. Get a probe some drives come with one or you can easily fashion one from a paperclip and push it slowly but firmly into the hole as shown in Figure 10-4. You ll feel some resistance. Push against this and slowly you ll see the drive tray open. Keep repeating this little by little .
