Similar to the Folkman-Lawrence topological representation theorem for oriented matroids we show that there is a one-to-one correspondence between intersection schemes and equivalence classes of arrangements of pseudocircles. Furthermore we consider arrangements where the pseudocircles separate the surface into two components. For these strict arrangements there is a one-to-one correspondence to a quite natural subclass of consistent intersection schemes. 1 Introduction The Folkman-Lawrence topological representation theorem for oriented matroids states that each oriented matroid may be represented by an oriented pseudosphere arrangement. Bokowski cf. 4 where further references are given gave an axiomatization of oriented matroids based on so-called hyperline sequences. This alternative axiomatization is especially natural in the case of rank 3 and led to a new direct proof of the Folkman-Lawrence topological representation theorem in this special case 5 and for arbitrary rank 6 .
