This interest among farmers in soil health as well as the interest among scientists in the broader concept of soil quality has produced a focus on soil organic matter SOM . Although SOM and its management are central to the development of healthy soils there are important concerns such as compaction and nutrient management that while impacted by SOM need to be understood and approached as important separate issues.
