Handbook of Economic Forecasting part 46. Research on forecasting methods has made important progress over recent years and these developments are brought together in the Handbook of Economic Forecasting. The handbook covers developments in how forecasts are constructed based on multivariate time-series models, dynamic factor models, nonlinear models and combination methods. The reason is that while the one-step-ahead forecast based on post-break data is unbiased if the model is correctly specified it may have a large variance. The mean square error of the forecast may be reduced if the model is estimated by using at least some pre-break observations as well. This introduces bias but at the same time reduces the variance.
