The persistently high economic growth rate experienced by Vietnam over the past years has led to an increase in electricity demand and consumption. During the period of 2001-2011, electricity production (including imported sources) grew at an annual average rate of , which was nearly twice the rate of overall economic growth. Electricity demand is expected to maintain its growth momentum in the upcoming period, averaging at around 10% per year throughout the period of 2011 2030. Currently, fossil fuels occupy a significant share in the total output of the electricity industry. Given its geographical, climatic advantages and natural characteristics, Vietnam has vast potential in renewable energy, including: hydropower, solar energy, wind energy, bioenergy. In order to exploit these potentials, over the past years, the Government of Vietnam has enforced many policies to promote the development of these energy sources, .
