TAILIEUCHUNG - Are bamboo-based agroforestry systems sustainable landuse options for the uplands of Hoa Binh Province, Vietnam?

The AKT solfware and WaNuLCAS modelling combined nicely to evaluate both the current and future ecological effects and economic potential of the bamboo- based AF systems. Under hedgerow intercropping (BambooHed), bamboo prevents erosion and improves soil fertility. The bamboo products (mainly from Tre gai and Hop species) harvested from the hedges provide farmers with important income as well as material for household. | Are bamboo-based agroforestry systems sustainable landuse options for the uplands of Hoa Binh Province Vietnam An example of the Knowledge-Based System KBS approach with market integration Hoang Fagerstrom La Nguyen2 James M. Our general hypothesis is that watershed management based on landscape relationships and a participatory approach involving local and external stakeholders suitably develops sustainable landuse practices that have a high level of acceptance by the local land users. A Knowledge-Based System KBS approach which combines local and scientific knowledge to develop sustainable landuse options is being tested at Dong Cao catchment 20 58 N 105 29 E 60 km from Hanoi Luong Son district in Hoa Binh province Vietnam. Findings indicate that bamboo-based agroforestry AF systems are one of the most promising systems for soil and water conservation as well as household economy. Market-oriented AF products are considered important for improving farmers livelihood in the study area which is under high pressure of urbanization. The Rapid Market Appraisal approach used in Indonesia and the Participatory Landscape Analysis approach developed in Dong Cao were combined to evaluate bamboo-based AF systems. The findings showed that the PRA RRA tools used for Participation Landscape Analysis and Rapid Market Appraisal the AKT solfware and WaNuLCAS
