TAILIEUCHUNG - Triterpenes from Toona sureni Moora (Meliacea)

Five triterpenes were isolated from EtOAc extract of the leaves of Toona sureni. Their structures were determined by spectral analysis including mass spectrometry and 2D NMR. These compounds were evaluated for their inhibition activity on Plasmodium falciparum. I - INTRODUCTION The plant Toona sureni Meliacea is known under the name Xuong moc or Lat khet in Vietnam. It is a tree and used in traditional medicine for treatment of dysentery and T. sureni was selected for its inhibition on Plasmodium falciparum 89 inhibition at 10 mg mL for EtOAc extract of the leaves during a screening program on Vietnamese flora of the Scientific Cooperation between Institute of Chemistry - VAST Vietnam and Institute of Natural Products of Chemistry Gif-Sur-Yvette France . In this paper we report the isolation and structural determination of five tri terpenoids 1-5 from EtOAc extract of the leaves of T. sureni. In addition antiplasmodial activity of the isolated compounds was examined. OH 3 214 II - EXPERIMENTAL Plant material and extraction T. sureni Moora was collected in Mai Chau - Hoa Binh - Vietnam on August 1996 and a specimen VN 0151 was deposited in the Institute of Botany-VAST-Vietnam. The dried leaves of T. sureni kg was extracted with n-hexane and then with EtOAc at room temperature. The EtOAc extract 38 g was purified by repeated chromatography on silica gel column .
