Though distributional and lexical indicators are not redundant straightforward combinations do not outperform individual indicators. 1 Introduction Though the phonemic inventory of a language is typically small phonetic and phonological processes yield manifold variants1 2 for each phoneme. Words too are affected by this variability yielding different realizations for a given underlying form. Allophonic rules relate phonemes to their variants expressing the contexts in which the latter occur. We are interested in describing procedures by which infants learning their native allophonic grammar could reduce the variation and recover words.
