If the fingerboard is made of ebony or rosewood you can also apply a bit of lemon oil to help remove dirt and grease. The color of the fingerboard usually indicates whether it is ebony black or rosewood dark brown . Lemon oil also moistens the wood to prevent over-drying but be careful not to use too much since excessive moisture can cause the frets to pop out of the fingerboard. If the fingerboard has a synthetic varnish you should use only soap and water to clean it. A very shiny finish usually indicates that a synthetic varnish has been applied to the fingerboard.
