Mothers whose babies became securely attached were conspicuous for gradual pacing of their behaviour in face-to-face interaction. They were responsive to the attention non-attention cycles of their infants and paced themselves accordingly. Close physical contact is an important factor in the communication between a mother and her infant. Ainsworth 1982 found that there was a relationship between maternal holding and the eventual nature of the infant s attachment.
