Although the problems in Vietnam may not be the same we hope to learn from the multidisciplinary approach. WE also studied many specific research methods that may be useful in Vietnam. Introduction There are about 164 million ha of forest in Australia covering 21 of the country area. This includes many low-height and dry forests with no commercial potential M ha is in nature conservation reserves Australia Government 2004 . Over M ha of plantation forest have been established by 2005 with 990 000 ha of softwood and 740 000 ha of hardwood plantations. Most of the hardwood plantations are Eucalyptus species. http mapserv plant Plantations . Softwood plantations supply 66 of domestic sawlog production in Australia. 12 of sawlog requirement is imported and the balance comes mainly from native forest hardwood sawlogs. There are very few hardwood plantations producing sawlogs. Ownership of plantations in Australia used to be state government owned now there is mostly private sector ownership especially for eucalypt plantations. Companies such as Timbercorp http are managed investment schemes to fund plantations. They get funds from investors and manage plantations. Timbercorp developed and now manages 12 of Australia s eucalypt plantations. Individual farmers do not plant big areas of plantations. The rotation time is approximately 10 years for eucalypt pulpwood plantations and 30 years for pines mostly sawlog plantations . Australia has more than 100 years in forestry researches. Dr Nambiar told us that the goals of plantation forests are i ensure that the long term trend in plantation productivity is nondeclining
