Urbanization can be seen as humans separating themselves from nature through built roads electric utility and telephone systems water works skywalks buildings and underground tunnels that link and house the activities of people who are as removed as possible from the intrusions of the natural world. Nature is overcome except when earthquake flood or storm severs the constructed linkages and destroys the barriers between people and nature Harvey 1985 . Suburbanization is in part a reaction to removal from nature taking people back to interaction albeit very controlled with plants animals and the natural landscape. The remaining separation of suburbanites from the local ecosystem is indicated by the ubiquity of turf grass and lawns throughout the United States requiring huge inputs of water chemicals and machines to survive. But community norms support the sanctity of the English garden with communities writing and enforcing covenants and laws against actions by homeowners that deviate from the agreed-on aesthetics of idealized place. Agriculture and forestry represent attempts of human communities to use the perceived potential of a local landscape to extract value and maintain human communities rural suburban and urban. The systems by which agriculture and forestry transform the ecosystem into an agroecosystem are varied. Some systems deplete the natural capital of place whereas others replenish it.
