For a long time, research on developmental issues in the biological and social sciences was mostly concerned with the early parts of life, such as infancy and adolescence. Studies paying full attention to people after they had passed through late adolescence were rare even though we all know that humans continue to develop. The dynamics of adult life can be as forceful and full of transitory states as is life before 20. Individual development is a lifelong process: from the moment of conception to the moment of death. BALTES Successful aging European Network on Longitudinal Studies on Individual Development ENLS The European Science Foundation ESF is an association of 50 research councils and scientific academies in 18 European countries. The member organizations represent all scientific disciplines - in natural sciences in medical and biosciences in social sciences and in humanities. One of its main modes of operation is establishing scientific networks. In this framework the European Network on Longitudinal Studies on Individual Development ENLS was established. By organizing a series of workshops on substantive and methodological topics the network has brought together several hundred scientists from very different fields -criminology developmental biology epidemiology pediatrics psychiatry psychology sociology statistics and others all actively involved in longitudinal research. By distributing fellowships to young researchers and twinning grants to researchers for planning common projects and by the development and administration of an inventory covering all major longitudinal projects in Europe the ENLS has further supported and stimulated longitudinal research.
