TAILIEUCHUNG - Influenza vaccination and hospitalisation in Elderly Health Centres

At the consensus conference Torleif Løvgren from Kongsberg presented his experiences from IT training for senior citizens at Kongsberg - in this report referred to as the Kongsberg model. The model is to a large extent based on voluntary work, idealism and extensive cooperation between different voluntary organisations and municipal bodies. According to this model training of elderly IT users is financed partly by the compulsory state school system where this activity is offered as an optional subject, the Red Cross offers rooms and computer equipment in a training centre such as “Open workshop”, the council for the elderly. | RESEARCH FUND FOR THE CONTROL OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES CM Schooling Ễĩ SM McGhee s ffi BJ Cowling ra GN Thomas WM Chan ffifftt KS Ho ra VCW Wong raw GM Leung fS Influenza vaccination and hospitalisation in Elderly Health Centres Introduction Key Messages 1. A cohort of Elderly Health Centres was examined to determine whether influenza vaccination decreased hospitalisation and mortality. 2. In the influenza season influenza vaccination reduced all-cause mortality by half and cardiorespiratory hospitalisation by a quarter. The extent to which influenza vaccination protects older people from serious morbidity and mortality needs to be confirmed in appropriately designed studies so that scarce health care resources can be used effectively. These estimates are substantiated by reviews and meta-analyses 2 but are increasingly controversial. First it is difficult to reconcile them with seasonal influenza-related mortality 3 because such a reduction in mortality in older people during the main influenza season could prevent more deaths than are caused by influenza.
