These events wreak damage and destruction regardless of local state or national borders. Scientists are predicting that because of certain climate change impacts such as sea-level rise and the warming of the oceans we can expect larger more widespread disasters in the future. In order to reduce the impact of these types of events in the future it will be necessary for community leaders to look past their local jurisdiction to county regional and in some cases internationalbased approaches. This chapter presents three case studies that clearly illustrate how multiple jurisdictions and communities can come together to address a shared risk. The first case study concerning the Living River Flood Management project in the Napa CA River Valley highlights several elements critical to the success of a regional approach to risk reduction such as a county-wide planning process involvement of the private sector detailed knowledge of the risk and potential mitigation measures and participation by the entire population of the county in making the plan a reality.
