Chen and Aviad 1990 Chen 1996 Nardi et al. 1996 2002 Cesco et al. 2002 . Beneficial effects of HS on plant growth are usually exhibited by easily measurable parameters such as leaf chlorophyll concentration shoot and root fresh and dry weight the number of root initials and the number of flower buds Rautham and Schnitzer 1981 Chen 1996 . The explanation of these observations however has been uncertain predominantly because of the lack of understanding of the plant growth promotion mechanism. Studies on the effects of HS on plants were often conducted under conditions of deficient mineral supply.
