This chapter addresses oxygen physiology, the risks and benefits of oxygen therapy, blood gas analysis, oxygen delivery systems, blood sampling techniques, and noninvasive blood gas monitoring. The amount of oxygen available to body tissues depends, in part, on the environmental oxygen concentration, the amount of oxygen in the airways, and, ultimately, the amount of oxygen in the blood. FIO2 refers to the fraction of oxygen in inspired air and is expressed as a percentage, for example, 21%, or in decimal form, for example, . PAO2, measured in mm Hg, is the partial pressure of oxygen in the gas mixture delivered to the alveoli, whereas PaO2, also measured in mm Hg, is the partial pressure of oxygen in the arterial blood.
