I recommend starting out with a limited palette 7 colours at the max. This serves a few purposes first to keep you focused on the main primar colours and not getting carried away. Second to denote a general colour scheme for your picture. Pick out a fairly well-rounded colour palette consisting of warm and cool light and dark colours. This palette will help you start out though by no means should it be the absolute be-all and end-all of the colour scheme in your picture. First of all use a big hard-edged airbrush and medium flesh tone to paint a big goofy oval-looking blob in the middle of a canvas. This is going to be your face. ok NOT yours but you get what I mean . Don t worry if it s looking a little bit shapeless right now because in the end it s going to look OK. Trust me on this. Next use the dark colour from your palette and a fairly large brush to paint dark blobs at the positions where the eyes nose and mouth are going to be. Eeeek Now the face looks Hollow Man or something but it won t be for much longer Then determine your lightsource and work the lights and .
