Although the mechanisms are not understood in detail recent work suggests the existence of a transient translocon within the peroxisomal membrane. Rapid formation and disassembly of the transient import pore ensures the integrity of the peroxisomal membrane barrier for small metabolites. In this review we will focus on the regulatory aspects of peroxisomal matrix protein import. Introduction Peroxisomes constitute a ubiquitous family of cell organelles also known as microbodies which were first described in 1954 by Rhodin 1 and also comprise plant and fungal glyoxysomes glycosomes of kineto-plastidae as well as Woronin bodies of filamentous fungi. The typical presence of hydrogen peroxide H2O2 -producing oxidases and H2O2-decomposing catalase were eponymous for their designation as peroxisomes 2 .
