These activities contribute to more than 90 of all hazardous waste. Other professionals with some understanding of the processes but not necessarily the chemical hazards include chemical engineers industrial engineers and some mechanical engineers. Many of the latter may have considerable expertise in a specific area. For instance a chemical process engineer in a paint manufacturing facility will be an excellent source of information on paint manufacturing. My intent in this chapter is to provide a basic understanding of typical hazardous waste generator activities. More in-depth knowledge in these areas will require further reading and interviewing people who work with the processes routinely. However any efforts to evaluate an activity based on interviews alone could lead to misguided information. .
