As part of the CARD project 032/05VIE, sustainable and profitable for Acacia Forest Sawlog production in Vietnam, a training course in Acacia tree improvement and silviculture is carried action on October 11-15 June 2007 in Ho Chi Minh City and surrounding areas. The main objective was to train junior FSIV and provincial scientists and technicians in basic tree improvement principles for acacia plantations and silvicultural techniques relevant to sawlog production. The course was comprised of lectures at the office of Forest Science Sub-institute of South Vietnam FSSIV and visit and practices in the field. Thirteen participants from various forest offices in eight provinces attended the training course. The list of participants is given in Attachment 1. The training program is shown in Attachment 2. The skills and back ground of the trainees were surveyed at the beginning of the training course. Before the conclusion of the training the trainees were asked to answer questions to determine what they have learned. These assessments are summarised in Attachments 3 and 4 respectively. The lecture session covered the following. 1. Basic principles of acacia genetic improvement Khongsak This lecture gave an overview of the basic principles of tree improvement with particular references to genetic improvement of acacias in Vietnam and neighbouring countries like Indonesia Philippines and Thailand. The content focused more on the practical rather than theoretical and statistical aspects and what should be done and what should not be done. Establishment and
