Chapter 1 has been re-organized and rewritten partly to reflect the modern setting of the book in which phonetics and phonolog - are part of more general language study and partly to overview phonetic variation change and learning as well as the relationship to spelling. With the help of Oxford University Phonetics Laboratory and the Churchill Hospital Oxford 1 have now checked all the figures against particular frames taken from dynamic MRI scans of the mouth during the speaking of various English phrases.
