Early in her career O Keeffe developed a highly personal highly refined style. Her early paintings were mostly abstract designs. In the 1920 s she produced enigmatic close-up pictures of flowers and precise cityscapes of New York City. Whether painting mysterious flowers or austere buildings she captured their beauty by magnifying their shapes and simplifying their details. O Keeffe s style of painting and in fact her whole life changed dramatically during a visit to New Mexico in 1929. She was enchanted by the bright southwestern sunlight the ancient Spanish architecture the Native American culture and the blanched bones of cattle in the desert. She then adopted her characteristic style. Thereafter she most often painted desert landscapes often with the whitened skull of a longhorn in the foreground.
