In general the Simple tenses are used to describe actions the Continuous tenses arc used to describe interrupted actions and the Perfect tenses arc used to put events into order. When talking about tenses it is very important to remember the time marker. There are many time markers - usually preposition phrases. Each tense can be used in each time - past present and future. Each tense has its own unique meaning and each one needs to be considered in relation to other tenses. Before we examine the tenses we need to make one important distinction between two types of verbs. All verbs in English can be classified as cither main lexical verbs or helping auxiliary verbs. Auxiliary verbs are further sub-divided into either tense auxiliary verbs to be to do and to have and modal auxiliary verbs. Describing Now 1.
