TAILIEUCHUNG - Lecture Introduction to computing - Lecture 13
In addition to floppy disks and hard drives, today's computer user can choose from a wide range of storage devices, from “key ring" devices that store hundreds of megabytes to digital video discs, which make it easy to transfer several gigabytes of data. This lesson examines the primary types of storage found in today's personal computers. You'll learn how each type of storage device stores and manages data. | CSC 101 Introduction to Computing Lecture 13 Dr. Iftikhar Azim Niaz ianiaz@ 1 1 Last Lecture Summary I Processor architecture Intel Processors AMD Processors Motorola Processors IBM Processors Comparing Processors Speed, Cache size, Registers, Word Size, FSB RISC and CISC Processors Parallel Processing 2 Last Lecture Summary II External Bus Ports and Connectors Standard Computer Ports Serial, Parallel, VGA, Component Port, DVI Expansion Slots and Adapter Cards External Bus Standards ISA, PCI, AGP, USB, IEEE 1394 (Firewire), PC card, HDMI Bluetooth and IrDA Plug and Play 3 Describing Storage Devices Every computer stores system software and application software. A Storage device holds data, instructions, and information for future use OS, User data A storage medium also called secondary storage, is the physical material on which a computer keeps data, instructions, and information Storage devices manage the media 4 Storage Device A storage device is the computer hardware that records and/or retrieves items to and from storage media Illustration of Volatility Store data permanently when computer is off Storage Devices 10 years ago C Storage Devices Nowadays Storage Capacity Storage Access Time Access time measures: The amount of time it takes a storage device to locate an item on a storage medium The time required to deliver an item from memory to the processor Access Time 11 Storage Technology Two main categories of storage technology Magnetic storage use a magnet Optical storage uses laser A third category of storage—solid-state storage—is increasingly being used in computer systems uses physical switches But is more commonly found in devices such as digital cameras and media players. Magnetic Storage Devices Most common form of storage Hard drives, floppy drives, tape All magnetic drives work the same Floppy Disk Hard Disk Tape 13 13 Teaching tip Figure and on page 227 provide illustrations of devices and the read/write process.
