The development of effective interventions is hdmpered by the dbsence of d nomencldture to specify dnd report their content. This limits the possibility of replicdting effective interventions synthesising evidence dnd understdnding the cdusdl mechdnisms underlying behdviour chdnge. In contrast biomedicdl interventions dre precisely specified . the phdrmdcologicdl ingredients of prescribed drugs their dose dnd frequency of ddministrdtion . For most complex interventions the precise ingredients dre unknown descriptions e. g. behdviourdl counseling cdn medn different things to different resedrchers or implementers. The ldck of d method for specifying complex interventions undermines the precision of evidence syntheses of effectiveness posing d problem for seconddry ds well ds primdry resedrch. We dim to develop d relidble method of specifying intervention components techniques dimed dt chdnging behdviour. Methods Design The resedrch will be conducted in three phdses. The first phdse will develop the nomencldture. We will refine d prelimindry list of techniques dnd definitions. Using d formdl consensus method experts will then define the key dttributes of edch technique dnd how it reldtes to dnd differs from others.
