TAILIEUCHUNG - VA Has Taken Steps to Make Services Available to Women Veterans, but Needs to Revise Key Policies and Improve Oversight Processes

Women constitute a special group within prisons because of their sex. Although the characteristics and corresponding needs of women prisoners can vary considerably between countries, several factors are common to most. These include many mental disorders, a high level of drug or alcohol dependence, many women experiencing sexual and physical abuse and violence before or in prison, the neglect of gender-specific health care needs and additional issues related to the women’s responsibility for children and families. Many women in prison have young children for whom they were often the primary or sole carer before they entered prison. . | United States Government Accountability Office GAO Report to Congressional Addressees March 2010 VA HEALTH CARE VA Has Taken Steps to Make Services Available to Women Veterans but Needs to Revise Key Policies and Improve Oversight Processes GAO Accountability Integrity Reliability GAO-10-287 March 2010 À GAO Accountability Integrity Reliability Highlights Highlights of GAO-10-287 a report to congressional addressees Why GAO Did This Study In 2008 VA provided health care to over 281 000 women veterans a fast growing subgroup of veterans.
