The cadmium concentration was determined by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry. Of the 36 analyzed samples 35 had values ppm range to ppm w hich is the m aximum concentration recommended 4 18 . These findings show the necessity for careful industrial m onitoring as som e mineral mixtures contain sufficient cadmium to cause toxicity in anim als. Keywords cadmium beef cattle and mineral salt Introduction The increasing price of raw materials is the main reason that mineral mixt ur e industries are looking to reduce costs with the aim of winning markets and guaranteeing business. Because of this research into the quality of the raw material sour ces is bein g done. In this respect it is believed that some new miner al formulations can be contaminated by t oxic elements such as heavy metals and r adioact ive substances. Cheap raw material sour ces are the most likely or igin of this pr oblem. For this r eason a st udy aimed at evaluating the level of pollutants in the mineral formulations used in Brazilian cattle which today number approximately 5 500 was initiated 13 .
