TAILIEUCHUNG - AEROSOL CHEMICAL PROCESSES IN THE ENVIRONMENT - CHAPTER 18

| 18 Corrosion of Asbestos Cement Building Materials by the Action of Atmospheric Acidic Aerosols and Precipitations Kvetoslav R. Spurny CONTENTS Observations and Measurements in Buildings and Asbestos Cement Sampling and Fibrous Dust Fibrous Dust Leaching and Observations and Measurements in South Asbestos Water Contamination by Tailings Air Contamination by Asbestos Mine INTRODUCTION By the action of atmospheric anthropogenic aerosols mainly of acidic aerosols water and gaseous acidic pollutants soot as well as of their reaction products acid rain several building materials are corroded and degraded. These complex processes are schematically summarized in the Figure and are described more in detail in Chapter 17. Asbestos cement products are subject to such corrosion as are other building materials. Nevertheless in comparison with commonly used materials . stones bricks tailings concrete etc. the corrosion of asbestos cement building materials is much more hazardous and harmful because this process is associated with the release and dispersion of fine highly carcinogenic asbestos fibers into the air and rainwater. During the corrosion of asbestos cement building materials the cement matrix of the surface material is being destroyed and a thin layer of free and weakly bound asbestos fibers is formed. Wind can then disperse the free fibers into the ambient air. Also rainwater can wash them from the roof and facade surface and transport them into other parts of the environment in particular sewage water soil and groundwater. 365 2000 by CRC Press LLC 366 Aerosol Chemical Processes in the Environment 1 Dry deposition and sulphation 2 Precipitation dissolves absorbed 5 Remnants of solutions or local deposition FIGURE Scheamatic picture showing the chemical .
