If you have decided to go after the most prestigious certification in the industry, there a few things that you should know; 1. CCIEs are not the types of individuals that relay on others for answer except when all other resources have been exhausted. The simple truth is, if you have achieved this level of certification, you are going to have a difficult time finding someone with the same level of expertise that you have anyway. Learn now, where to go to find answers, how to understand the "show" and "debug" output from the router, and a systematic approach to problem solving that results in focused questions and narrowed scopes on the problem. It's much easier to find the source of the problem once you have narrowed it down to a specific item. Approaches vary somewhat but always learn to start by confirming the basics work then move to the more complex issues. This usually results in starting with the connection, then looking at the layer two protocol, then the layer three and then the application level stuff. 2. This is a LONG journey. No matter what you have read, there is no overnight process that will guarantee you a CCIE in just a few weeks. Unless you have an IQ that's over 200 plan on at least six months from the time you start to the time you complete your CCIE. 3. There is no substitute to hands on experience with the equipment. However you do it, get your hands on some routers and switches. You need to be very astute at shortcuts, able to quickly interpret "show" and "debug" output and comfortable with the IOS command line and help screens. 4. You are not ready to take the lab until you are comfortable with the configuration topics you hate! Generally the configuration topics we like, are the ones we know well. Don't overestimate your knowledge of them either however. Don't dismiss the topics that you don't understand, or don't like. You have to know them all, inside and out! 5. A high score on the written, in no way assures you of success on the lab. Likewise, a barely passing score on the written does not mean you are not ready for the lab. These are two entirely different types of tests, meant to test two different skill sets. 6. Don't be intimidated. There is a ton of information that you will be looking over and studying in the next few months. Don't be intimidated because you are uncomfortable or unfamiliar with a great deal of it. CCIEs take what they know and apply it to the problem at hand in order to find a solution. No one was born knowing all this stuff. At some point in time, every CCIE out there didn't even know what TCP/IP was. 7. Lastly, don't under estimate the power of God and your family and friends to help you get through this. It's a grueling process that is ten times harder without knowing you have supporters.
