Three methods: wet, dry and steam explosion were used to extract fibers from bamboo shoot culm sheath. Wet extracting method gave the best bamboo fibers. The fibers got by wet method were flat while using dry methods, fibers were broken on the surface. Bamboo fibers using wet methods gave the highest tensile strength of 272 MPa. After treated with NaOH, the strength of bamboo fibers increased about 20% in comparing with untreated fibers while silane treated make bamboo fibers strength lower about 15%. | Journal of Chemistry Vol. 45 5A P. 182 - 189 2007 BAMBOO SHOOT CULM SHEATH FIBERS EXTRACTION AND CHARACTERIZATION Received 16 August 2007 NGUyEN Huy TUNG1 AND TQRU FUJII2 Polymer Centre - Hanoi University of Technology - Vietnam 2Mechanical Faculty - Doshisha University - Japan SUMMARy Three methods wet dry and steam explosion were used to extract fibers from bamboo shoot culm sheath. I - INTRODUCTION Natural fibers were used to make many productions of commodity such as textiles ropes canvas paper etc. long time ago. Now they are also paid attention to replace synthesis fibers that are expensive and will destroy out environment in the future. Owing to low prices reproduce every year and steadily rising performance of technical and standard plastic the application of natural fibers are increasing. In Egypt mixtures of straw and loam dried in the sun were employed as construction composite for centuries 1 . Today some natural fibers such as hemp 2 jute 3 oil palm 4 and bamboo 5 are used to replace glass fiber. A renaissance in the use of natural fibers as reinforcements in technical application is taking place mainly in the automobile and packing industries door panel and car roof 6 7 . In Japan and some others Asian countries bamboo shoot is considered as food. People cut bamboo shoot and take off the culm sheath before put in food process. The remaining of this process is bamboo shoot culm sheath and it was thrown away as waste. In this study we try to extract fiber from these bamboo shoot culm sheath for green composite. Three mechanical methods were applied to extract
