In 1953, the immediate Past–President of the American Society of Ichthy- ologists and Herpetologists, Charles M. Bogert, formed a committee to compile common names for the North American herpetofauna. The committee consisting of R. Conant, F. R. Cagle, C. J. Goin, C. H. Lowe, W. T. Neill, M. G. Netting, K. P. Schmidt, C. E. Shaw, and R. C. Stebbins was chaired by Conant and the resulting publication summarized their philosophy, methods, and the names (Conant et al., 1956).
