As has been shown over the past 20 years it is important to use thermally induced precompression in all flightworthy adaptive aerostructures as shown in Equation 3. It comes in two major variants the Tip-Joint Flexspar arrangement as shown in Fig. 5. This configuration is particularly well suited to low subsonic flight control using symmetric balanced aerodynamic surfaces.
