Reprinted by permission. In Part Five, the elements of managing a retail enterprise are discussed. We first look at the steps in setting up a retail organization and the special human resource management environment of retailing. Operations management is then examined—from both financial and operational perspectives. Chapter 11 reports how a retailer can use its organizational structure to assign tasks, policies, resources, authority, responsibilities, and rewards to satisfy the needs of the target market, employees, and management. We also show how human resource management can be applied so that the structure works properly. Human resource management consists of recruiting, selecting, training, compensating, and supervising personnel. Chapter 12 focuses on the financial dimensions of operations management in enacting a retail strategy. We discuss these topics: profit planning, asset management (including the strategic profit model, other key ratios, and financial trends in retailing), budgeting, and resource allocation. Chapter 13 presents the operational aspects of operations management. We cover these specific concepts: operations blueprint; store format, size, and space allocation; personnel utilization; store maintenance, energy management, and renovations; inventory management; store security; insurance; credit management; computerization; and crisis management.
