While they make for reasonably easy ground handling pilots trained on the current range of aircraft fitted with them tend to have slow feet and they are less well co-ordinated than pilots trained on tail-draggers. This is no idle prejudice. The Tiger Club in Britain operates a wide range of tail-dragging aeroplanes and the greatest single problem for its check-pilots is sharpening up the footwork of new members who have to demonstrate their ability to fly the Tiger Moth before being accepted as flying members. The Tiger which likes to fly sideways and is far from responsive shows up the deficiency within seconds. Each type of gear has certain advantages and disadvantages and choice depends upon practical considerations. Tailwheel gear Tailwheel undercarriages have two main units forward of the centre of gravity and one behind which in the simplest case may be only a skid. At rest the aircraft sits tail-down at an angle of attack slightly less than the stalling angle of the wings with high-lift devices extended. This allows the aeroplane to be three-pointed onto the ground with power off. Among amateur-built aeroplanes there are more taildraggers than any other. Advantages. The advantages of taildraggers lie in their aerodynamic cleanliness potential if not in fact relative lightness simplicity and cheapness. With care they can be made to generate less drag so that they contribute to increased lift drag and higher performance than nose-wheel gear. The tail-down attitude enables pilots to cope better when flying into and out of small rough fields. On the ground they can be pushed around and manhandled into smaller spaces than similar machines with nosegear. Disadvantages. The disadvantages lie in handling on take-off and landing loading and view over the nose when .
