As we mentioned at the beginning of this project one of the major advantages to using instances of symbols is that doing so doesn t add appreciably to the weight size of your projects. This becomes very important when you distribute your content on the Web because the larger a file becomes the longer it takes to download. There are other advantages to using instances including the ability to name target and affect instances appearing on the Stage. Named instances are instances that have been assigned a unique identifier or name in the Properties Inspector. Naming a particular instance allows you to use it in an ActionScript. Use this field in the Properties Inspector to assign a name to any selected instance. Symbol instances can receive instructions from the following places Behaviors which are pre-programmed effects that automatically apply ActionScript code instructions to a selected instance. Behaviors are accessed from the Behaviors panel Window Behaviors . ActionScripts which are small programs that provide instructions to named instances. ActionScripts are created and accessed from the Actions panel Window Actions . Timeline Effects which are pre-programmed visual effects accessed in the Insert Timeline Effects menu that can be applied to an instance. Each Timeline Effect has its own individual dialog box where the effect can be customized. You can only apply one effect at a time. To see Timeline Effects properly you must use the Test Movie function. Note It isn t necessary to reverse the frames on the Box layer since the box never moves or changes.
