Inevitably, a crisis requires the selection and retention of outside advisors such as law firms and accounting firms. About four in 10 companies rely on the CEO or other senior management to select these advisors. Five in 10 companies turn to the entire board to determine the choice or appoint a special committee to make recommendations; less frequently, the lead director makes a recom- mendation to the board.
