In Venezuela there are few health organizations that offer structured assessment of autism spectrum disorders (ASD), which emphasizes the need to develop a model for the study of these disorders. The model would need to be accurate and able to be used across sites for the diagnosis and identification of ASDs. The Genetic Unit together with the Psychology Department of La Universidad del Zulia in Maracaibo, Venezuela, has been trying to standardize the diagnostic process of ASDs while following scientific guidelines and all within our limited resources. This research group consists of two child neurologists, two child psychologists, a social worker, and three geneticists.
