Third, auto manufacturers are reluctant to cut prices on new cars. As Busse, Silva-Risso, and Zettelmeyer (2006) show, this does happen quite regularly via rebates o ered by manufac- turers either to customers or dealers. However, manufacturers are very concerned about how this a ects customers' price image of a car, and what inferences customers might make about the quality of a car if a rebate is o ered. Indeed, customer rebates are used least frequently by manufacturers whose cars have the highest reputation for quality and reliability (such as BMW, Audi, Porsche, Honda, and Toyota).
