These wooded areas have been and still are greatly influenced by man and his methods of cultivation. The biodiversity of forest islets thus depends as much on human actions as on the environmental conditions. What is the influence of forest management methods and forestry traditions on the biodiversity of forest islets What kind of diversity in terms of structure and function characterizes forest islets that have found a niche in ecosystems dominated by intensive farming To illustrate our remarks we use a sector in Greater Poland representative of extensively farmed countryside and situated approximately 50 km to the south of Poznan. First the land units are delimited with the help of satellite data. Second an automatic extraction process pinpoints the forest islets. Finally the biodiversity of these forest islets is analyzed using a frame sample.
