Water and energy are two critical ingredients of modern civilization. Without clean water, life cannot be sustained. Without energy, we cannot run computers, power homes or manufacture products. As the world’s population grows in number and affluence, demand for both resources is increasing faster than ever, with far-reaching implications for both water scarcity and rising levels of global warming pollution. Woefully underappreciated, however, is the fact that water and energy oftentimes compete with one another. We consume vast amounts of water to generate energy, and we consume vast amounts of energy to extract, process and deliver clean water.
