The FDIC conducts the household survey in partnership with the US Census Bureau. The FDIC sponsors a special supplement on unbanked and underbanked households that is administered in conjunction with Census Bureau’s Current Population Survey (CPS). The first household survey was conducted in January 2009, and the results were released to the public in December 2009. The release of the 2009 survey repre- sented the first time consistent and comparable data on unbanked and underbanked households were available at the national, state, and large metropolitan statistical area (MSA) levels.
