As the focus of medical research has evolved from disease-based outcomes to the important patient-oriented outcomes of mortality and quality of life we are beginning to have answers that change the way we practice. To address this change we present an evidence-based approach to common problems encountered by primary care physicians written by primary care physicians. Where possible we provide the latest recommendations based on the best available evidence. We also acknowledge when that evidence is lacking and if recommendations are based upon opinion rather than fact. We use the Strength of Recommendation Taxonomy to rate recommendations based upon the evidence within each chosen topic area. In the December 2006 issue we present an introduction to EBM with a focus on its definition major steps strengths and challenges. We address ways in which busy clinicians can efficiently answer clinical questions that arise during a normal day at the office and how they can stay current with the medical literature applicable to primary care. We also address how primary care physicians can critically evaluate an article when necessary and assess its validity and applicability as well as whether its findings should be incorporated into their practices. We begin to address common conditions and their diagnostic or treatment dilemmas. We provide the latest evidence for the screening treatment and follow-up of the number one cause of 0095-4543 07 - see front matter 2007 .
